Die Rose des Nordens und ein Eldorado für Digitalnomaden, Kultur- und Naturbegeisterte
Viele Leute, die im Digitalbusiness tätig sind, lassen sich in Chiang Mai nieder. Moderne Cafés, Restaurants, Shoppingmalls und zahlreiche Workspaces mit kostenlosen WLAN-Hotspots ermöglichen dort das digitale Arbeiten unter besten Voraussetzungen. Hier trifft das Moderne auf das Alte, inmitten einer wunderschönen Landschaft. Mir hat es vor allem die Altstadt innerhalb der Stadtmauern angetan.
Anreise & Verkehrsmittel
Inlandsflug von fast jedem Flughafen nach Chiang Mai (CNX) möglich. Gute Zugverbindungen ab/bis Bangkok vorhanden (Schlafwagen vorab reservieren, da Nachfrage groß). Viele Busanbieter bieten auch die Strecke vom Süden in den Norden in einem Schlafbus sehr kostengünstig an. Vom Flughafen aus kommt man schnell mit dem Taxi in die Innenstadt. Es gibt auch die kostengünstige Variante mit dem Songthaew, den roten Pickup-Sammel-Taxis, die mit fixen Preisen und vorgegeben Strecken innerhalb des Stadtgebiets ihre Routen abfahren.
Sightseeing & Ausflüge
- Die vielen Tempeln der Altstadt: Viele wunderschöne alte Tempel sind innerhalb der Stadtmauern zu besichtigen.
- Elefanten Camp: Vorsich! Die Auswahl rund um Chiang Mai ist groß und es gibt hier viele „schwarze Schafe“ in Sachen Tierhaltung! Nicht alle Camps sind ethisch vertretbar. Mir persönlich ist es extrem wichtig, im Vorhinein die Camps stark zu hinterfragen und online gut zu recherchieren. Wichtig: Keine Betonböden-Gehege, keine Fußketten und schon gar kein reiten auf den Tieren. Elefanten sollten weder ein Bild malen noch Fußballspielen können!
- Wandern in Doi Suteph Nationalpark: Am besten geht ihr den Monks Trial in der Nähe des Tierparks los. Nach einem kleinen Aufstieg gelang ihr zum etwas unbekannteren, aber dafür umso schöneren Tempel Wat Pha Lat. Hier verirren sich zum Glück nur wenige Touris hin. Die Natur holt sich hier schon langsam das Tempelgelände wieder zurück. Unzählige Schmetterlinge fliegen am Bachbett entlang und freilaufende Pfauen geben einem das Gefühl im Garten Eden zu sein.
Weiter geht der Weg über den Monks Trial steil bergauf zum Tempel Wat Phra Tat Doi Suthep. Eine wunderschöne, große Tempelanlage mit toller Aussicht über die Region Chiang Mais. Allerdings ist hier kein Funke von Idylle mehr zu verspüren. Massen von Touristen werden mit großen Reisebussen auf den Berg gebracht, die sich gestresst durch die Tempelanlage drängen und nach einer Stunde wieder abfahren. Nach dem Besuch des Tempels gibt es aber noch ein Highlight – den Sonnenuntergang von einem der Viewpoints am Doi Suthep zu genießen. Mein Tipp: Einen Fahrer organisieren und zum Monks Lookout-Viewpoint fahren. Dieser ist nicht so überlaufen, wie der Doi Suthep View Point.
Unterkunft
Ob einfache Homestays oder luxuriöse Hotels, in Chiang Mai ist die Auswahl groß. Die zentrale Lage innerhalb der Stadtmauern kann ich für die Unterkunftssuche nur empfehlen. Man kann hier alles problemlos zu Fuß erkunden. Mein Tipp: Das „Ma Guest House“ liegt zentral und ist ein liebevoll familiär geführte Unterkunft.
Shopping & Restaurant
Außerhalb der Stadtmauern gibt es das eine oder andere Einkaufszentrum, die ich aber nicht besucht habe, da ein viel besseres Shoppingerlebnis: die Saturday und Sunday Walking Street. Hier wird jedes Wochenende ein großer Nightmarket über mehrere Straßen aufgebaut. Sobald die Sonne untergegangen ist, hat man das Gefühl, dass alle Einwohner und Touristen von Chiang Mai sich auf diesem Markt befinden. Hier kann es durchaus schon mal eng und laut werden, aber genau das macht es zu einem coolen Elebnis. Von Textilien, selbstgemachtem Schmuck/Kunst bis hin zu frittierten Kakerlaken mit Currypulver bekommt man hier alles. Es wird einem auch Livemusik und traditionelle Tanzauftritte geboten. Leckeres Essen findet man hier auch an jeder Ecke.
