The Turtle Island
Die kleine schildkrötenförmige Insel ist viel mehr als nur ein Taucherparadies. Man findet hier auch viele schöne Strände, urige Unterkünfte und eine tolle Inselatmosphäre. Doch vom Tourismus verschont geblieben, ist auch Koh Tao nicht mehr. Bemerkbar macht sich das, an der großen Anzahl an Ausflugsagenturen, Rollervermietern und den viel Bars und Discotheken am Sairee Beach.
Anreise & Verkehrsmittel
Entweder vom Festland, von Koh Samui oder von Koh Phangan aus erreicht man mehrmals täglich mit der Fähre das kleine Eiland. Da die Insel nur ca. 7 km lang und 5 km breit ist, kann man alles problemlos zu Fuß oder mit dem Roller erreichen. Taxis sind kaum vorhanden, aber dafür umso mehr Longtail Boote, die dich an jeden beliebigen Strand der Insel bringen.
Sightseeing & Ausflüge
- Koh Nang Yuan: Türkisblaues Wasser, tolle Felsformationen und perfektes Schnorchel-Domizil. Leider sehr überlaufen, aber trotzdem einen Halbtagesausflug wert, ist die kleine Nachbarinsel allemal. Hierzu einfach einen der zahlreichen Bootsfahrer ansprechen, einen guten Preis aushandeln und los geht’s. Achtung! Flossen und Plastikflaschen Zuhause lassen. Die Insel steht unter Naturschutz, daher sind keine Plastikflaschen und Flossen erlaubt. Essen und Trinken kann man sich im vorhandenen Restaurant holen. Mein Tipp: Fahrt erst gegen Nachmittag rüber, denn da sind die meisten Ausflugsboote mit den Tagestouristen, die von Koh Phangan und Koh Samui kommen alle wieder weg. Eintritt liegt bei ca. € 3,00.
- Shark Bay: Ein toller Strand an der Nordseite der Insel. Dieser ist nur durch das Hotel Haad Tien Beach Resort zugänglich. Als Tagesgast zahlt man hier einen Eintritt von umgerechnet € 5,00. Dafür darf man die Sanitärenanlagen benützen und sich auf der Liegewiese des Hotels ausbreiten. Denn bei Flut ist der Strand, wie auf den Fotos erkennbar, sehr schmal. Schnorchelausrüstung nicht vergessen! Mit etwas Glück sieht man Riffhaie.
- Sairee Beach: Ein schöner, langer Sandstrand an dem sich ein Restaurant, Bar und Nachtclub nacheinander reiht. Vom Pier aus kann man problemlos zu Fuß an den Strand spazieren. Tagsüber eignet sich der Strand gut zum Entspannen und Baden. In der Nacht kann man hier die ganze Nacht durchfeiern.
- Freedom Beach, John-Suwan Viewpoint & Taa Toh Lagoon: Diese drei Ausflugsziele lassen sich perfekt kombinieren, da diese nebeneinander liegen und der Eintritt von 50 Baht nur einmalig verlangt wird. Am Freedom Beach werden einige Strandstühle kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt und es gibt ein nettes Restaurant. Hier gibt es auch viel natürlichen Schatten und ein Sonnenschirm wird nicht benötigt. Ähnlich ist es am Taa Toh Lagoon Beach der nur wenige Gehminuten entfernt liegt. Ein Highlight ist auf jeden Fall der Viewpoint, dieser bietet einen unglaublichen Blick auf die schönen türkisblauen Buchten (festes Schuhwerk empfehlenswert).
- Tanote Bay: Nach ein paar asphaltierten Steilkurven kommt man mit dem Roller zur Tanote Bay. An diesem Strand gibt es ein paar einfache Unterkünfte, ein Restaurant und eine Tauchschule.
Unterbringung
Es gibt viele kleine, einfache, aber auch hochwertige Unterkünfte auf Koh Tao. Wer es gern zentral haben möchte, sucht sich so wie ich eine Unterkunft in der Nähe des Sairee Beach.
Restaurant & Shopping
Das „Coconut Monkey“ ist eindeutig mein Lieblings-Frühstückslokal. Viele liebevoll selbstgemachte Gerichte und guten Kaffee mit Blick aufs Meer. Authentisch und zu günstigen Preisen empfehle ich das „Nong muay Thai Food„. Hier gibt es eine lustige Besitzerin / Köchin, köstliche Speisen zu sehr günstigen Preisen. Einen gemütlichen Shoppingbummel kann man rund um den Pier und Richtung Sairee Beach machen.
