Aussteiger-Hippie-Backpacker-Paradies beschreibt diesen Ort wohl am Besten. Die Atmosphäre und die Leichtigkeit, die man in Pai fühlt, macht diesen Ort wohl so besonders. Pai liegt eingebettet im Hochland der Provinz Mae Hong Son an der Grenze zu Myanmar und darf auf keiner Backpackerreise fehlen!
Anreise & Verkehrsmittel
Die Anreise nach Pai startet mehrmals täglich am Busterminal von Chiang Mai. Mit dem Minivan werden in ca. vier Stunden Fahrzeit über 130 Kilometer und 762 Kurven bewältigt. Der Ticketpreis liegt ca. bei € 5 pro Person und Strecke. Die Haltestelle liegt im Zentrum von Pai, von der man auch zu Fuß zur gewünschten Unterkunft kommt. Falls man eine Unterkunft außerhalb des Ortes hat, empfehle ich gleich mal einen Roller anzumieten, denn auf diesen kann man in Pai sowieso kaum verzichten. Mein Tipp: Wem während Autofahrten schnell schlecht wird, sollte Reisetabletten oder einen Travel-Gum nicht vergessen!
Sightseeing & Ausflüge
- Pai Canyon: Nach einer kurzen Fahrt mit dem Roller und einem kleinen Spaziergang kann man einen tollen Sonnenuntergang mit vielen anderen jungen Leuten genießen. Am Canyon selbst gibt es einige Wege, die erkundet werden wollen. Mein Tipp: Am Parkplatz noch einen frischen, leckeren Fruit-Juice bestellen und mitnehmen. Dieser schmeckt bei der spektakulären Aussicht besonders gut. Der Eintritt zum Canyon ist kostenlos.
- Land Split: Viel größer als erwartet, liegt hier ein ca. 2 Meter breiter und ca. 10 Meter tiefer Erdriss, der sich 2008 auf dem Grund eines Farmers aufgetan hat. Der Grundbesitzer ist sehr nett und ladet jeden gerne herzlich ein, um einen kurzen Spaziergang hier zu machen. Auch der liebevoll gestaltete Garten ist einen Besuch wert. Eintritt: Freiwillige Spende.
- Boon Ko Ku So – Bamboo Bridge: Hier wurde eine tolle Idee geschaffen, um die Gegend für Touristen zugänglich zu machen, ohne die Natur dabei zu zerstören. Ein gemütlicher Spaziergang bietet Gelegenheit die ansässigen Reisbauern bei der Arbeit zu beobachten. Mein Tipp: Ordentlich Sonnenschutz auftragen und Kopfbedeckung nicht vergessen! Um die Mittagszeit kann es hier richtig heiß werden. Falls man die gesamte Strecke abgehen möchte ist man schon eine längere Zeit in der prallen Sonne unterwegs. Eintritt ca. € 0,80.
- Pam Bok Waterfall: Am Weg vom Land Split zur Bamboo Bridge fährt man direkt an diesem Wasserfall vorbei. Leider ist es hier sehr überlaufen. Wenn man über den Hügel klettert, gelangt man in einen kleinen Canyon, der in der Trockenzeit problemlos begehbar ist. Eintritt ca. € 0,80.
- Hua Chang Waterfall: Tolle Wanderung zum Wasserfall die ca. 2 Stunden pro Strecke mitten durch den Dschungel führt. Dadurch der Wasserfall nicht direkt mit dem Auto oder Moped erreich werden kann, sind kaum Leute anzutreffen. Also ein toller Ausflug ohne vielen Touristen. Unteranderem gibt es keine gute Wegbeschreibung. Man fährt mit dem Roller auf Erdstraßen durch einige Felder und sobald die Straße von einem Fluss gekreuzt wird, heißt es runter vom Roller und los geht’s mit der Wanderung. Mein Tipp: Badeschuhe bzw. Schuhe mit denen man durchs Wasser gehen kann mitnehmen! Man muss hier alle paar Meter den Fluss durchqueren. Barfuß durch den Dschungel, so wie ich, ist da auch keine so gute Idee. Hier wird kein Eintritt verlangt.
- White Big Buddha Statue: Die große Buddha Statue liegt auf einem Berg und ist kaum zu übersehen. Von oben hat man eine tolle Aussicht auf das Umland von Pai. Mein Tipp: Zum Sonnenuntergang ist es hier besonders schön. Jacke mitnehmen! In den Wintermonaten kann es nach Sonnenuntergang schnell kühl werden.
- Tham Lod Cave: Vorab einen Fahrer organisieren. Dieser bringt euch in einer guten Stunde Fahrzeit durch die schöne Landschaft Mae Hong Son zur Loth Cave. Eine Erkundung der Höhlen auf eigene Faust ist nicht erlaubt, daher bekommt man hierfür einen Guide. Man fährt von Höhle zu Höhle per Holzfloss auf einem unterirdischen Fluss. Etliche Stalagmiten, Stalagtiten und uralte ausgegrabene Holzsärge können besichtigt werden. Nach der Führung kann man noch das Gelände rund um die Höhlen erkunden. Am Retourweg den Fahrer bitten, dass er am Doi Kiew Lom View Point einen Zwischenstopp einlegen soll. Hier hat man einen tollen Ausblick über die hügelige Landschaft von Mae Hong Son. Mein Tipp: Festes Schuhwerk, Stirn- oder Taschenlampe mitnehmen. Nur der Guide hat eine Laterne dabei, ansonsten wird es schnell mal dunkel. Es fliegen viel Fledermäuse und Schwalben herum, darum ist eine Kopfbedeckung sinnvoll.
Unterbringung
Viele nette, einfache Unterkünfte in und rund um Pai. Ich nächtigte im „Family Hut Pai Resort“, direkt am Fluss und daher nahe der Walkingstreet gelegen. Mein Tipp: Unterschätzt das Klima zwischen November und März nicht. Tagsüber angenehme 25 °C doch am Abend fröstelnde 6°C Außentemperatur. Das solltet ihr bei eurer Unterkunftssuche berücksichtigen. Wir frierte in den einfachen Holzhütten am Abend sehr.
Shopping
Viele nette kleine Boutiquen, die am Abend während des Nachtmarkts öffnen. Es werden hier auch zusätzlich zahlreiche Garküchen und Stände mit Köstlichkeiten aufgebaut.
